Constant: New Babylon as Trans-Media and other publications
In March 2014 Yoshikazu Nango, a Japanese scholar from the Meiji University in Tokyo visited Fondation Constant for the first time, to interview Trudy Nieuwenhuys and then board member Ludo van Halem, curator 20th Century at Rijksmuseum for his dissertation about the influence of Constant on the modern city and architecture.
This year, Yoshikazu Nango presented his PhD: Constant: New Babylon as Trans-Media for which he received commendable evaluations from the panel of five professors who assessed the thesis.
The publication will be revised for publication in Japanese within 1-2 years. An English table of contents and the abstract can be found here.
Instigated by this, Fondation Constant decided to partner up with Nai010 to work on translating some of the most important publications and texts on Constant and by Constant to English. First and foremost we will be working on Constant’s own manuscript New Babylon, Skizze zu ein Kultur, which he wrote in German and then partly translated into Dutch, other publications on our list are Mark Wigley’s Constant’s New Babylon, the Hyper-Architecture of Desire, Constant, de late periode by Trudy van der Horst, Marcel Hummelink’s Après nous la liberté. Constant en de artistieke avant-garde in de jaren 1946-1960, and hopefully Yoshikazu Nango’s PhD.
We will keep you posted…
