The latest episode of the podcast In het Rijksmuseum is called ‘20th Century: A world without work.’ Host Janine Abbring speaks to Ludo van Halem, curator of 20th century art at the Rijksmuseum, about Constant’s career, philosophy and his New Babylon project. The conversation is centered around the  construction Ruimtecircus (Space Circus), constructed between 1956 and 1961.

Cover art podcast In het Rijksmuseum

In this podcast series created by the Rijkmuseum, curators, experts and artists tell extraordinary stories about works of art in the Rijksmuseum collection and their creators. For those not near Amsterdam: the episodes are made so that they can be enjoyed without being in the museum!

Want to take a closer look at Ruimtecircus? View it here on the website of the Rijksmuseum, or here on the website of Fondation Constant. Janine Abbring and Ludo van Halem discuss how Ruimtecircus, which was part of Constant’s New Babylon project, can be seen as a kind of scale model, as it was Constant’s idea to have it built much larger on Museumplein in Amsterdam, as imaged in the photo montage below.
